The First Melt

The stream begins as almost nothing, a thread of water finding its line through ochre grass and pale rock, unhurried, certain of its direction. Behind it, the valley opens into tiers of forest, snow-dusted summits, and a sky that cannot decide between clarity and storm. This is where glacial architecture begins its long translation into river, into lowland, into the water that sustains everything below. The body understands the cold before the mind names it. What looks like an ending is, of course, the very start.
