Armor of Solitude

He crosses a pale world, the grasses burned to ivory by a high equatorial sun, his bulk moving with the slow authority of something that has not needed to hurry in forty million years. Oxpeckers cling to the armor of his back, small and purposeful, a compact civilization unto themselves. The foreground dissolves into soft light, the horizon into haze, and he becomes the only fixed point in a landscape that seems to be dreaming. Standing before this image, the body registers what the mind struggles to name: the specific weight of witnessing something irreplaceable, still here, still sovereign. Dirk Collins has learned to find these moments at altitude and at the edge of things, and this is what that patience earns.
